Project leader: Dr Zena Kamash

Zena is Lecturer in Roman Archaeology in the Department of Classics, Royal Holloway, University of London. As well as having family connections to the Middle East, Zena has a PhD in Roman archaeology in the Middle East (‘Water Supply and Management in the Near East: 63 BC – AD 636’) from the University of Oxford. She has also worked on memory in the Roman world. This project comes out of Zena’s long-held wish to raise the profile of Roman archaeology in the region and to encourage hope for its future and that of its people.

زينة حاليا تعمل محاضرة في الاثار الرومانية في جامعة لندن وسابقا كانت تعمل باحثة في جامعة اوكسفورد حيث حصلت على شهادة الدكتوراه في موضوع الاثارالرومانية في ادارة المياه في منطقة الشرق الاوسط. زينة تعتقد بأن دراسة الحضارات القديمة وخاصة في الشرق الاوسط مهمة جدا ولها دورها في رؤية الماضي وبناء المستقبل

 

AHRC Cultural Engagement Fellow: Dr Stephen Smith

Stephen is a Visiting Tutor in Roman Archaeology in the Department of Classics, Royal Holloway, University of London. His PhD in Roman archaeology looked at how religious architecture in ancient Rome was used to evoke memories of a traditional identity and social values. Stephen has travelled extensively in the Middle East and North Africa, and is keen to explore new ways in which people can experience the region’s ancient past and use it positively in thinking about the future.

ستيفن مدرس متخصص في الآثار الرومانية في جامعة لندن وعلى وجه الخصوص فن العمارة و الذاكرة. لدى ستيفن خبرة واسعة من خلال سفراته في الشرق الاوسط و في شمال أفرقيا ويريد ان يتكشف طرق جديدة للاستفادة من خبرات الماضي في المنطقة واستخدامها ايجابيا للتفكير في المستقبل

Creative writing: Dr Sarah Ekdawi

Sarah’s father is the Egyptian artist, Mounir Ekdawi and her interest in the Middle East is inspired by her family.

Art and drawing: Miranda Creswell

Since leaving Camberwell School of Art, London, Miranda Creswell’s work as an artist has never been entirely studio based. She uses the individual and personal medium of pencil and paper but engages with many people throughout the process of the work, indirectly questioning the barriers set up between artists and non-artists.

Her career has comprised working as an artist in such environments as the Nuffield Orthopaedic hospital and the Archeology Department of Oxford University. She has recently had an exhibition at the Cent Quatre Art Centre in Paris, France, where her exhibits question how individual memories are attached to universal landscapes and how personal and cultural memory shapes the present day.

منذ تخرّج ميراندة من مدرسة كمبيرويل للفنون ( لندن) كان معظم عملها كفنانة هو خارج الاستوديوحيث تستخدم القلم والورقة في فنها وتشارك الناس خلال كافة مراحل انتاجها الفني وتحاول بطريقة غيرمباشرة ازاحة الستار اللذي يوجد عادة بين الاشخاص الفنانين و غير الفنانين. عملت في مستشفى نوفيلد(اوكسفورد) و في قسم الاثار في جامعة اوكسفورد. حديثاً اقامت معرضا في المركزالفني ” سن كاتر” في باريس وحيث حاولت من خلال عملها الفني هذا عرض السؤال عن كيفية الربط بين الذاكرة و المنظر الطبيعي وعن الذاكرة الفردية والثقافية وأثرها على الحاظر

Photography: Rory Carnegie

Rory is an artist/photographer with a particular interest in cultural relocation. He has exhibited widely, in the Far East, Russia, Europe and the USA. For many years he has taught and helped develop the creative skills of young asylum seekers, culminating in a book entitled, ‘How the World came to Oxford’. Rory has experience of the Middle East having recently completed a Masters programme on Development and Emergency Practice, which involved several field research trips to the region.

روري هو فنان و مصور فوتوغرافي وله اهتمام خاص في التنقل الثقافي وقد قدم عروض على نطاق واسع في الشرق الادنى وروسيا والاتحاد الاوروبي و الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. منذ سنوات عديدة وهو يهتم بامورالشبان من طالبي اللجوء السياسي ليعلمهم على تطوير قابلياتهم الابتكارية مما نتج عن نشر كتاب عنوانه : كيف أتي العالم إلى اوكسفورد. لروري خبرة في الشرق الأوسط ومؤخرا اكمل برنامج الماجستيرفي موضوع التنمية والاغاثة واللتي تطلبت سفره للمنطقة لعدة مرات
